The ‘inevitability’ of central bank digital currencies (CBDC) has taken a hit recently as multiple countries – including Australia, Colombia, and Canada – have paused their CBDC initiatives, calling into question the need for digital fiat.
A digital currency will destroy the 3rd world and add disruptive complications to the "underground system" ie meat, lobster, arms,(including RPGs), ammo, pharmaceuticals (many black market pharmaceuticals are old stock) cocaine and opium, the economic value of the underground system parallels that of the mercantile system, which is why Drug Cartels offered to pay off a country's debt in return for impunity, 1978 - 1990, Miami was swamped with Cartel money, and the "authorities" turned a blind eye...all of that would have been impossible with CBDC. It'll never happen.
