TIL: The skull at the bottom of the cross is known as the Skull of Golgotha. Golgotha means the place of the skull. In Christian tradition that skull is the skull of Adam. In Orthodox Christianity, the crucifiction happened directly over the place where Adam's skull lay. The blood of Jesus thus seeped down and covered the skull. Adam brought sin into the world, hence, the blood of the lamb (Jesus) washed away the sins of the world.
