First, God had to pick somebody as the father of the Messiah. Should this be someone that is of great character and deeds? Someone like Job - a contemporary of Abram, and both of these men were alive while Noah was still alive. It would be interesting to learn how much contact Noah had with his descendants at that point.
Should someone like Job be the chosen father for the Messiah, what message does that send to all of us sinners? That we need to be good to earn the favor of God?
Or, should God choose the most detestable family group ever, and show all of us common sinners that no matter how much we rebel against God, His promises are still kept and we can be saved?
The first Bible read through makes it seem like a nice story of how God is faithful to His promises (which is true), but readings after that - focusing on different things - show a pattern of horrendous jew behavior that sticks out immediately.
The jews are evil little goblins that need to be punished, but the messages gleaned by their actions can give hope to the rest of us sinners too.

My theory.
