Yeah, I know about BBS's, newsgroups, early website based internet platforms like Prodigy and Compuserve (which spawned AOL, pleasde kill me), followed by actual website based interactions like the aforementioned Yahoo! groups, and even early forums like About.com or Delphi. I lived it. Still some good forums out there, niche, for products and activities - woodworking forums, DIY, Jeep modifications, tool and die, boating maintenance, etc.

So, I guess it's a fair point that social media existed more than 10 years ago in early forms. I would state that the change I am mentioning is more based on the use of the smartphone, and the mobility and constant connection to socvial media at all points in the day, not just when you have everyone in the house not using the landline and you can dial in without someone in the home picking up the receiver and dropping your connection.

At that point, social media took on a whole new level of invasiveness and ubiquity. I suppose I would clarify and restate my contention with that caveat - Social media as an ubiquitous and invasive medium - thanks to your correct summary of events.
