Voat.co had been gone for a couple months, Trump was out of office, and the smoke of burning cities was still in the air. The MAGA dream was dead and all hope was lost. It was the end of a era and it really felt like it. I think back to 2016 and damn.. Couldn't have imagined how it would all turn out.
I started this website as an experiment because I missed voat and there was no where else like it to go. I could never imagine it would all come together and actually work, especially 6 months later. While creating a literal voat clone was useful to spread awareness and rebuild the community, as the site matures it's become a strain overall due to liability concerns and other reasons that I've been dealing with. So talk.lol will become the site's official name and domain. The site's default theme has changed, so no more voat goat. The goat has been replaced with stick figures. Yeah I know, lame, but I have bigger plans eventually. I am sure some will hate these changes so I went out of my way to make this painless. All accounts registered up till this point will receive a 'Gen Xyz Goat' badge. This badge is special because it unlocks 'voat mode', which opens up an option in your account options. This mode enables the classic voat theme, goat and all. You can enable disable and re enable any time.
If you prefer to use the voat.xyz domain you can continue to use it. There are no differences between the domains. Also I imagine searchvoat.co will continue to archive the site, I don't see any reason he wouldn't. I will work on getting getting our own search feature regardless.
This was a tough decision, but one I feel had to be made. I loved voat.co and hated to see it die. But it really is the end of an era and the beginning of a new one. Time to see where the current takes us.

No that is not the case. But it was a possibility, like a dark shadow over my head. If putt reached out to me and offered up the voat.co domain, I'd go full steam ahead with voat and even make him an admin if he wanted. If .co's issues was solely about money then why not? I very much doubt that would ever happen though, Putt seems to have moved on and doesn't care either way it seems but who knows. I only mention all this in case of the slim chance he sees this and would like to take up the offer.
Why give Putt any control or say into how this site operates? He sold us out and cashed in. He gave up all 'rights' to have any position at the helm of any kind of voat site ever again.

I can't imagine anyone would really want it. Most websites are for making money and it's been long established that there is simply no way to monetize a properly free speech site. Advertisers won't touch it with the devil's dick.

This has always been a potential issue. But, I kinda doubt that's the reason right now. If the TM holders were complaining, I think Voat Mode wouldn't be available.

Copyright isn't dependent on money changing hands, it's dependent on the artist "intending" to transfer copyright. That is after that point they are relinquishing the right to resell and reproduce that work and they are transferring that right to someone else.
Now I don't know if anything that formal happened with the voat goat. Which color scheme do you want to save? I changed the default color scheme for the site when not in voat mode. If you want to save that one there is no point because it's easy to revert back to it. Visit https://www.talk.lol/decolorize.php to get back to it. But yeah you can save up to 3 color schemes in the colorizer. /v/colorizer is a good place to get started with some different themes.

He would go many months at a time before posting on the site, and the lack of maintenance got worse and worse. Putt said himself that he was only aware the site went down when somebody emailed him.

Copyright isn't dependent on money changing hands, it's dependent on the artist "intending" to transfer copyright. That is after that point they are relinquishing the right to resell and reproduce that work and they are transferring that right to someone else.
Now I don't know if anything that formal happened with the voat goat. Maybe it did, wouldn't have been hard for atko to dig up some copypasta contract and have the guy sign it, maybe it didn't, but it's at least arguable that since he donated the piece for use as a trademark he wasn't just giving a .gif file, he was donating IP.
I remember it on voat.co but I could be wrong.

I think this move is smart, both legally (for obvious reasons) and strategically, as the talk.lol brand doesn't have any baggage (yet! ;) ).
Also this place is lovely, but it was and never will be voat, so it's better to embrace that. Besides the voat logo looked weird on the pink/purple colour scheme you gave me with the random generator link... on that topic is it possible to save the current colour scheme? I would like to try my own but I'm afraid of losing this one.

Which color scheme do you want to save? I changed the default color scheme for the site when not in voat mode. If you want to save that one there is no point because it's easy to revert back to it. Visit https://www.talk.lol/decolorize.php to get back to it. But yeah you can save up to 3 color schemes in the colorizer. /v/colorizer is a good place to get started with some different themes.

How hard would it have been to put it up for a Voat and let the users voice their opinions. Even if we cannot make final decision, at least voice support of dissent before OP arbitrarily and capriciously changed the most basic attribute of the site. OP didn’t event try to make an argument and justification for switching. Even if the vast majority would have been opposed, at least they would have had buy in on the process itself. The way it was done is stupid and authoritarian, both things go against the spirit of Voat- hence bait and switch.
Now we can’t be sure anything op does is done in good faith.

It's obvious AOU's little sister couldn't handle the constant references to real Voat after he kept making terrible decisions that went against the spirit of the original Voat. Any legal reasons are a fig leaf. Trademark is a use it or lose it proposition, and the Voat name was abandoned. AOU's little sister got his userbase off the corpse of Voat, and now doesn't want to have any accountability of what the original Voat stood for.
For the record, Putt said himself he kept the site up out of his own pocket for the 2020 elections. I believe him. I believe he lost financial backing, and more importantly, lost interest, and shut the site down of his own free will.

That's why I said, "more importantly, lost interest". It would have been wrong for him to take money from his users if his heart wasn't in it anymore -- and it clearly wasn't. He would go many months at a time before posting on the site, and the lack of maintenance got worse and worse. Putt said himself that he was only aware the site went down when somebody emailed him.
Yes, it was obvious that there was always going to be a need for a landing place for the community, Putt or not. I think the biggest criticism that can be leveled at Putt is that he was unwilling to hand off Voat to the community, and he left very short notice on the shutdown. I don't think that was malice so much as disinterest on wanting to bury the site from his life once and for all. He expressed a love/hate relationship with it.
I think the biggest concern with The_Venerable is that he's AOU's little sister. Both AOU and The_Venerable are active, so I think there's very little risk of either site going down due to owner disinterest in the short term.
He hangs out on the SearchVoat forum. You can speak to him there if you like, and ask if he's anywhere else besides that:
