The 10-foot-tall marble statue bears a Confederate flag carved into the marble of its center column and was initially built as a memorial to Confederate and World War I soldiers. Over the years, various inscriptions have been added to the statue, including dedications in memory of veterans who fought in World War II, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam War and the Persian Gulf War, the database says.
