The sheriff’s office said on October 24, 2023, deputy Marvin Morales was found unresponsive in a stall in a Central Division office restroom by his fellow deputies, who treated him with Narcan. He was then taken to the hospital for treatment.
An internal affairs investigation was launched as narcotics - later revealed to be fentanyl - were found on the scene, and other evidence showed Morales had used the drugs intentionally.
The office's investigation uncovered that on the same day, Morales had confiscated narcotics wrapped in tinfoil from a citizen while conducting a field stop, and a similar package of narcotics was found in Morales’ uniform pants pocket after he was taken to the hospital.
Internal investigation documents also revealed that Morales lied about disposing of a glass pipe he had confiscated from a citizen. and used the confiscated pipe to smoke narcotics at his home three to four times.
