Instead of outright deletion from a sub, have a "kick" option to move posts to v/whatever      (TalkDev)
submitted by Antiliberalsociety to TalkDev 3.9 years ago (+11/-0)

This would be for off topic/troll posts that might have a good point or meaning, but have little to do with the intended purpose of the sub. I can see deleting spam or malicious trolling, but not every case warrants it. I'm starting to see posting that appears to be trying to goad mods into deleting them, without coming off as too offensive or spammy, so as to paint them as censor happy.

For those that might be confused, this would be an added option, not in lieu of deleting.

Should moderators have full rights to do what they want with a subverse?     (TalkDev)

We all know @itsgettingcloser likes to delete comments in his subverse. Personally, I view user created subverses as a private space where the owner can dictate how it's ran. You can block him, and his subverses and not be bothered by it. But there are others who believe sub owners should not have this power, which I understand. Curious what the community thinks about this. Should there be a balance of power? Or should sub owners have full authority? Like I've said recently to someone else, on these types of sites, I view going into /all as the wild west, where you are not guaranteed a safe space, or anything really. The difference is these sites don't default to /all, like this site does, and instead either show you your subscriptions or show you the default subs, which enforces this images of user created subverses being 'separate' from the main site. What are your thoughts on this issue?

Edit: I've decided to leave as is. If you don't like a user or a sub then simply block them. Create your own sub. This way leads to the least intervention on my part. I will probably switch the default view to /front, which display default subs, or your subscriptions. Curate your own content. There is already an option available if you prefer /all.

More transparency for posts deleted by a mods/admins     (TalkDev)
submitted by system to TalkDev 4.0 years ago (+19/-0)
6 comments last comment...
Hi all. It's come to my attention that the site is lacking when it comes to removed content. So I've implemented some changes to make things more transparent. First off, content deleted by a mod or admin will now remain in your profile. Mods/admins must now supply a reason for why the content was removed, which will now display in the deleted posts page. You will also receive a message in your inbox telling you why the content was removed, from where, and by who. These changes are not retroactive and only apply from here on out. It's also worth noting there was a bug with deleting comments, where if a mod tried to delete a reply to a comment, it would instead delete the original base comment, so some comments might have been mistakenly removed. This has been fixed.

Request to implement delete confirmation     (TalkDev)

I inadvertently hit the delete button on a comment (big hands, little buttons) and behold, my comment is gone. Not a big deal, but could we implement something like "are you sure?" as a confirmation before it actually deletes?

County flag based on post location to assist self-policing     (TalkDev)
submitted by aleleopathic to TalkDev 4.0 years ago (+2/-1)
12 comments last comment...
Short version: put a small flag based on the location a post originated from (not the user's account) in the header bar of a post. The idea is that shills/shitposters/etc slip up with VPNs from time to time, and it gives a way that someone can ruin an aged account by accidentally posting from e.g. Israel.

I looked into how 4chan did it to see if I could help it along over here; it seems they use one image with every country flag in it, and serve just a small portion of the image based on a country code. Here's their image: https://files.catbox.moe/mots3b.png

I mentioned this to Cynabuns who suggested posting it here: https://www.voat.xyz/viewpost.php?postid=609273351f6b7&commentid=6092d2da6189c

What do you think?

New restrictions for accounts with 0 or less total scp + ccp     (TalkDev)
submitted by system to TalkDev 4 years ago (+46/-1)
32 comments last comment...
Accounts with 0 or less combined scp + ccp are now rate limited to 1 post every 15 minutes. They also cannot submit link posts, but can post links as a discussion post. These restrictions do not currently apply to comments, but that could change in the future. Want to avoid these restrictions? Ensure your account has a positive balance of 1 point, either ccp or scp it doesn't matter, as long as the total balance is bigger than 0.

Voat.co had a similar immune system which penalized accounts with negative points. I believe this is a better way of handling it. We'll give this system a try, I will make adjustments if needed. New accounts might have a rocky start of having limits, then not having them, then having them, then not, but it will stabilize out the more they post (granted they're not posting genital mutilation, naked jewish women, etc.)

Also, the amount of downvotes you're allotted has been changed from 1:1 to a .5:1 ratio with upvotes. If you're unable to downvote then try upvoting some more.

Edit: Negative accounts with -20 or more are now rate limited in comments as well. Starting off with 5 minutes, we'll see how that goes.

Edit2: I changed the submission time out to 5 minutes, I will adjust it as needed.

When you go to the comments page for a post, there is no preview button to expand images/videos like there is on the front page. It would be nice to have a preview button on that page to see the image/video instead of having to click the link of the image/video and it taking me to the website instead.

Changes to downvotes     (TalkDev)
submitted by system to TalkDev 4 years ago (+34/-1)
97 comments last comment...
Downvotes allotted has been changed from 2:1 to 1:1 with upvotes

You now must have at least 25 ccp to downvote

You can now only downvote a particular user 20 times in a 24 hour period. 10 reserved for submissions and 10 reserved for comments.

In other news there is a new gore tag. It's not written in the rules yet but gore content should be labelled as such. Examples of gore include excessive blood, limb removal, mutilation.

Edit: I'm monitoring feedback, considering all your concerns. Changes or adjustments may follow.

This was a much needed change. Comment threads can now continue indefinitely. Also you will now get properly notified when someone replies to your comment in threads beyond 6 replies. I know on mobile the space available for each comment gets taken up pretty quickly. This is something I will work on. Please report any bugs or issues you run into with this new system.

Site update: The deletion log, and new site rules     (TalkDev)
submitted by system to TalkDev 4 years ago (+53/-1)
93 comments last comment...
Hey guys. Hope all is well.

The deleted submissions log is now up and can be viewed by all with an account. This lists posts deleted by an admin or a mod of the subverse. To access, click the button in the side menu. While in /all it will list all removed posts, while in a sub it will just list posts from that sub.

Note: Older removed submissions do not list a date or the account that removed it. I went ahead and manually added my name to the submissions I've removed. Newer posts will track this info.

Note to sub mods: If you need a submission removed from the delete log you can contact me or cynabuns. The reason must be valid and reasonable i.e. CP or dox.

A deleted comments log will soon follow.

I've also added 2 new site rules

No vote manipulation i.e. using multiple accounts to upvote your own content/mass downvoting an account.

and

Any content which contains nudity or could be considered porn must be labeled NSFW. This includes drawn/cartoon imagery.

The last rule is in response to recent abuse and is something I think a majority of the people here want or don't care about. It keeps the site from becoming /b/ and allows people who don't want to see this type of content to block the sub or disable seeing it via blocking nsfw posts in their account options.

Edit: After thinking about it I removed "and be posted to an appropriate subverse" from the last rule.

@system - The solution to spamfag users like Hitler/Hitler2/NukeIsrael/NorthSeaPagan/etc. is to automatically impose restrictions on accounts with low or negative CCP/SCP.     (TalkDev)
submitted by Nosferatjew to TalkDev 4 years ago (+21/-2)
48 comments last comment...
I've brought this up before, and I think it's high time to implement a system that is at least similar to what voat.co had. Here's how it worked on voat.co...

- If a user had less than 100 CCP, they couldn't downvoat comments or posts.

- If a user had less than 10 CCP, they couldn't make posts of their own.

- If a user had negative CCP they were restricted to a certain number of comments per day/week depending on how deeply negative their CCP was. The more negative their CCP, the less often they were allowed to comment. Remember @Edgelord666? His CCP was in the negative thousands, and he was only allowed to comment something like once a week.

- All users, regardless of their CCP/SCP totals, were also blocked from posting more than 3 times to any given sub in a 60 minute period.

My suggestion is to implement this system, or one similar to it, but have it also apply to negative SCP (something voat 1.0 did not do). Here's why...

On voat.co, a new user could pretend to be a non-spamfag for just long enough to generate enough positive CCP (more than 10), enabling them to make posts. Then they would go dark for two weeks, after which point, none of their original comments could be voated on (either up or down), thus securing their ability to post with that account, forever. They would then use their post-ready account to spam the site, and, so long as they never overtly violated TOS, no one could stop them from spamming lolis or animal gore or whatever their "legal", non-TOS violating spam was, no matter how deeply negative their SCP got.

So, @system, I am suggesting the implementation of the voat.co system with one addition: negative SCP restricts users from being able to make posts. Maybe between -1 and -10 they can post once per day, and anything lower than -10 restricts them to once per week. I don't know how you would prefer to break it down, but there needs to be some kind of SCP based restriction in place to prevent spamming. It is not possible for you to moderate the site 24/7 all on your own. A system like this will give voat.xyz an immune system similar to what voat.co had, which enabled any user with over 100 CCP to participate in protecting the site from spam, and in some cases illegal, content. CCP and SCP can and should function as more than just an internet virtue meter. These point totals can and should be used to protect the site from malicious activity.
