UK police charge two men with spying for China including MP researcher     (www.channelnewsasia.com)

British police on Monday (Apr 22) charged two men with spying for China, including one reported to have worked as a researcher in Britain's parliament for a prominent lawmaker in the governing Conservative Party.

Anxiety has mounted across Europe about China’s alleged espionage activity and Britain has become increasingly vocal about its concerns in recent months.

The two men, aged 32 and 29, were charged with providing prejudicial information to China in breach of the Official Secrets Act and will appear in court on Friday.

"This has been an extremely complex investigation into what are very serious allegations," said Commander Dominic Murphy, head of the Counter Terrorism Command at the Metropolitan Police.

The Chinese embassy in London said the allegation that China was trying to steal British intelligence was "completely fabricated".

"We firmly oppose it and urge the UK side to stop anti-China political manipulation and stop putting on such self-staged political farce," an embassy spokesperson said in a statement.

CHRISTOPHER CASH NAMED BY POLICE
One of the men was named by police on Monday as Christopher Cash.

In September, the Sunday Times reported that Cash had been arrested for spying while working as a researcher in parliament for Conservative lawmaker Alicia Kearns, chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee.

A Christopher Cash was listed on parliamentary documents from early 2023 as working for Kearns.

In September, a lawyer for the arrested man issued a statement denying the accusations of spying without confirming the identity of their client. The same legal firm did not provide a statement on Monday when contacted by Reuters.

Cash does not have publicly available contact details and could not immediately be reached for comment.

UK ACCUSED CHINA OF STEALING ELECTION DATA
Last month, the British government summoned the chargé d’affaires of the Chinese Embassy in London after accusing Chinese state-backed hackers of stealing data from Britain's elections watchdog and carrying out a surveillance operation against parliamentarians.

China denied those allegations, calling them "completely fabricated".

The government also said in September that Chinese spies were targeting British officials in sensitive positions in politics, defence and business as part of an increasingly sophisticated spying operation to gain access to secrets.

Separately, Germany on Monday said it had arrested three people on suspicion of working with the Chinese secret service to hand over technology that could be used for military purposes.

In southern Yemen, American mercenaries are killed for the UAE     (gercekbudue2021.blogspot.com)

https://gercekbudue2021.blogspot.com/2024/04/in-southern-yemen-american-mercenaries.html

For a long time, the liquidation of figures from the Islah Party, the Yemeni branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, as well as Salafist leaders and journalists, remained an unknown dimension of the Emirati strategy in Yemen. In the eyes of outside observers, the long series of assassinations committed in the southern governorates of the country, especially between 2016 and 2018, often seemed like a marginal issue in the conflict. These assassinations were seen as a (tacitly acceptable) form of fighting against jihadists, a policy deemed necessary and effective after the liberation of Aden from Houthi influence during the summer of 2015. In any case, this policy remained under close scrutiny.

In this context, the Aden authorities, loyal to the Emiratis, passed off the assassinations that targeted dozens of people as simply a settling of scores between Islamists. In particular, they pointed the finger at the responsibility of jihadists or even the Houthis, as was the case in the case of the assassination of the rising Salafist figure, Abd al-Rahman al-Adani, who was killed in February 2016. In other cases, they announced that their extrajudicial liquidations targeted Members of Al-Qaeda or ISIS.

Kill opponents

However, in the city of Aden and its surrounding areas, Emirati involvement in the assassinations, which in reality had completely different goals, was no secret. Civilians were targeted who distanced themselves from the jihadists, had no commitment other than political or mosque-related activity, and what they all had in common was criticism of the United Arab Emirates. The list of victims of this secret war is long. At least a hundred people were killed between 2016 and 2018 in attacks that led to insecurity in the large coastal city, and which continue to this day. While Aden during this period should have been a showcase for a peaceful Yemen free of the Houthis, the city remained in a state of instability and misery. Since then, it has been able to embody in the eyes of many Yemenis the incompetence of possible alternatives to the rebels coming from the north.

Initially, Al Jazeera broadcast, in its investigative documentary program “The Black Box,” a documentary entitled “What role is the UAE looking for in Yemen?” in 2018, that is, at the height of tension between Qatar and its neighbors, in which the United Arab Emirates was accused of financing a series of assassinations. To fight its opponents, especially the Muslim Brotherhood in southern Yemen. This documentary revealed that this strategy was accompanied by many human rights violations, especially systematic torture in many secret centers spread in areas under UAE control.

Direct testimonies of the killers

Six years later, Nawal Al-Mahqafi's relentless documentary American mercenaries hired by UAE to kill in Yemen provides confirmation of the accusations against the UAE. This journalist of Yemeni origin has solid experience, and has won three Emmy Awards in honor of her work on sex trafficking in Iraq and on the Covid crisis in Yemen. In her documentary titled “The War in Yemen: Political Assassinations Funded by the UAE,” Al-Mahqafi allows direct listening to the narration of American citizens, who are former soldiers, who directly participated in the assassination program. In their interventions, they confirm that they participated in the fight against the jihadists, and they are certain that they only did good deeds, and obeyed the orders coming from Abu Dhabi without saying a word.

Throughout the documentary, horrific webs are unmasked; The mercenaries were contracted through the security company “Spear Operations Group,” which is run by the Hungarian-Israeli Abraham Golan, thanks to his contacts with the Palestinian Mohammed Dahlan, who became an advisor to Mohammed bin Zayed, the ruler of the Emirates.

The journalist’s investigation includes a number of interviews and supporting documents, and benefited from the hard work carried out by the organization “Reprieve” and human rights activist Baraa Shaiban. It also included previous information that had been published by the American media outlet Buzzfeed in 2018. These data as a whole prove how the identities of most of the victims cannot in any way be linked to armed Islamic movements. Even if so, extrajudicial executions remain a clear violation of human rights, and are carried out outside any legal framework. The documentary shows how these are by no means “collateral victims” and that it is a deliberate strategy to eliminate opponents of the UAE, even by going through an alliance with a number of jihadists hostile to the Muslim Brotherhood. The documentary mentioned specific names and details, in addition to strange coincidences, such as those that occurred between the assassination of Ahmed Al-Idrissi, a leader of the Southern Movement, who is known to have refused to hand over the port of Aden, which was under his control, and to transfer its administration to the United Arab Emirates. Issues of politics and exploitation are closely intertwined.

Documentary film for political purposes?

Unsurprisingly, the documentary caused a sensation on Yemeni social media. The nature of the speeches shows the fragmentation of the political space, and also reveals the bad faith of many intellectuals, journalists, and decision-makers in Yemen, who have continued to position themselves according to the interests of their regional sponsors. In this regard, the reactions to the information provided by the BBC constitute a good indicator of the state of public debate after nearly a decade of war.

In the face of the scandals revealed by Nawal Al-Mahqafi, the UAE’s defenders flatly linked the journalist to an imaginary alliance with the Houthis due to the assumption of her Hashemite origins (the lineage of the Prophet), which they guessed linked her to the leaders of the rebel movement. They wanted their criticism of the BBC documentary to be part of the intellectual movement to redefine Yemeni identity that aims to exclude the Hashemites from the national narrative. At the same time, UAE defenders point to the supposed involvement of the Muslim Brotherhood in exposing these facts, illustrating how regional polarization over the relationship with the Muslim Brotherhood continues to influence the structuring of issues and positions.

Contrary to all expectations, we also find among the criticism some pro-Houthi activists who, with their increased popularity thanks to their commitment to Gaza, are currently trying to avoid angering the UAE. They thus pointed to the opportunistic nature of broadcasting this documentary. From their point of view, this film constitutes an attempt by the United Kingdom to put pressure on the United Arab Emirates, which refuses to join the military coalition formed by the United States to stop Houthi attacks in the Red Sea. This criticism appears to have little regard for the professionalism of the BBC's editorial staff and the timeliness of such an investigation, which began several years ago.

In defense of human rights

There is no doubt that the documentary may validate the widespread discontent among the Yemeni public towards the Emirati strategy. From Sudan to Libya and Yemen, the foreign policy of the UAE, supported in particular by France, has been provoking unrest, violence and instability since the Arab uprisings of 2011. Through its effort to establish a military base and a small emirate it controls on the island of Socotra, and through its support of the southern movement against the government. Recognized by the international community, “Little Sparta” pursued a problematic diplomacy that remains controversial in its aims as well as its methods. Thus, the state of disintegration in Yemen is due in large part to the decisions taken in Abu Dhabi, and no doubt due to the arrogance of the Saudi leaders.

In reaction to the broadcast of the documentary, Ali Al-Bukhaiti, a former supporter of the Houthis who has become a vocal critic of them, explained how the strategy of liquidating political and religious figures in Aden directly contributed to the failure of the Saudi Arabia-led coalition. In fact, this strategy has deeply divided the anti-Houthi camp and generated mistrust towards regional actors. Two days after the documentary was broadcast, Al-Bukhaiti organized a space (chat room) on the X website (formerly Twitter) to discuss the documentary, and more than 15,000 people followed the live broadcast.

In parallel, reactions to the documentary also expressed a desire to bring the issue of extrajudicial assassinations to the courts. For many activists - some of whom have been imprisoned and tortured by UAE security forces - the evidence provided provides material for international prosecution. In this regard, the work carried out by Reprieve and Hoda Al-Sarari is of great importance. Highlighting it by Nawal Al-Mahqafi constitutes an essential step.

This Website is Selling Billions of Private Messages of Discord Users     (www.hackread.com)

https://www.hackread.com/website-selling-private-messages-of-discord-users/

In a major privacy breach, private data including private messages of millions of Discord users are being sold on a clear web website. The website, Spy.pet, is an internet-scraping company, that has been collecting data from Discord since November 2023.

So far, as seen by Hackread.com, it has sold four billion public Discord messages which were publicly accessible and gathered from 14,201 servers, which are home to 627,914,396 users.

While it is unclear who owns the website, the very nature of the data – scraped messages – suggests a potential security flaw in how Discord interacts with bots or third-party applications.

What Does “Scraped Messages” Mean?
Scraping is a method where automated tools extract information from a platform, such as Discord, by exploiting weaknesses in bots or unofficial apps’ access and interaction with the targeted platform.

This can expose private chats, server chats, and direct messages, potentially exposing conversations between users or groups. Previously, scrapped databases from Chess.com, Clubhouse, LinkedIn, Mastodon, and GETTR also surfaced online.

What Information is at Risk?
Security experts suspect that the leaked data from Discord chats could expose personal information, private photos and videos, financial details, and company secrets. Users’ usernames, nicknames, and real names could be included, and sensitive media could be shared.

Additionally, financial details could be a target for scammers, and company secrets, especially if Discord is used for business communication, could also be exposed.

How does Spy.net Operate?
Spy.pet is a chat-harvesting platform that collects user data through profiles containing known aliases, pronouns, connected accounts, Discord servers, and public messages. Users must buy credits (costing $0.01 each and a minimum of 500 credits) to access profiles, and archives of conversations, and search for servers.

It only takes cryptocurrency for payments except for using a Coinbase link as it has banned Spy.net. In February 2024, the platform was DDoS’ed, but the owner claimed minimal damage.

Global defence budget jumps to record high of $2440bn. For the first time, government military spending increased in all five geographical regions.     (www.theguardian.com)

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/apr/22/global-defence-budget-jumps-to-record-high-of-2440bn

Global military expenditure has reached a record high of $2440bn (£1970bn) after the largest annual rise in government spending on arms in over a decade, according to a report.

The 6.8% increase between 2022 and 2023 was the steepest since 2009, pushing spending to the highest recorded by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri) in its 60-year history.

For the first time, analysts at the thinktank recorded a rise in military outlay in all five geographical regions: Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Oceania and the Americas.

Nan Tian, a senior researcher with Sipri’s military expenditure and arms production programme, warned of the heightened risk of an unintended conflagration as governments raced to arm. He said: “The unprecedented rise in military spending is a direct response to the global deterioration in peace and security.

“States are prioritising military strength, but they risk an action-reaction spiral in the increasingly volatile geopolitical and security landscape.”

The two largest spenders – the United States (37%) and China (12%) – made up around half of global military spending, increasing their expenditure by 2.3% and 6% respectively.

The US government spent 9.4% more on “research, development, test and evaluation” than in 2022 as Washington sought to stay at the forefront of technological developments.

Since 2014, when Russia first invaded Crimea and the eastern Donbas region of Ukraine, the US has been shifting its focus from counter-insurgency operations and asymmetric warfare to “developing new weapon systems that could be used in a potential conflict with adversaries with advanced military capabilities”, according to Sipri’s report.

While dwarfed by the US in military spending, China, as the world’s second biggest spender, allocated an estimated $296bn in 2023, an increase of 6% on 2022. It has consistently increased defence spending over the past 29 years, although the biggest growth periods were in the 1990s and between 2003 and 2014.

The single-digit growth figure of the last year reflected China’s more modest economic performance in recent times, according to Sipri.

Russia, India, Saudi Arabia and the UK – the largest spender in central and western Europe after a 7.9% year-on-year increase – follow in Sipri’s league table.

The Kremlin’s military expenditure in 2023, after a year of full-scale war with Ukraine, was 24% higher than in 2022 and 57% more than in 2014, when Russia invaded Crimea. With spending at 5.9% of GDP, equivalent to 16% of the Russian government’s total expenditure, 2023 marked the highest levels recorded since the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Amid growing tensions with China and Pakistan, Indian spending was up by 4.2% from 2022 and by 44% from 2014, reflecting an increase in personnel and operational costs.

Sipri’s analysts noted that 75% of India’s capital outlay was on domestically produced equipment, the highest ever ratio, as India progressed towards its goal of becoming self-reliant in arms development and production.

Saudi Arabia’s 4.3% rise in spending, to an estimated $75.8bn, or 7.1% of GDP, was said to have been powered by the increased demand for non-Russian oil and rising oil prices after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Expenditure in the Middle East rose by 9% to an estimated $200bn, making it the region with the highest military spend as a proportion of GDP in the world at 4.2%, followed by Europe (2.8%), Africa (1.9%), Asia and Oceania (1.7%) and the Americas (1.2%).

The military expenditure of Israel, second behind Saudi Arabia in the region but ahead of Turkey, grew by 24% to reach $27.5bn, driven mainly by its offensive in Gaza.

Iran was the fourth largest military spender in the Middle East. Its spending went up marginally (+0.6%) to $10.3bn. Sipri said the share of total military spending allocated to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had been increasing since at least 2019.

Ukraine became the world’s eighth biggest military spender in 2023, with an annual rise of 51% to reach $64.8bn, still only equivalent to 59% of Russia’s military spending that year.

Kyiv’s military expenditure increased by 1,270% between 2014 and 2023. The military aid received from over 30 countries is included in Sipri’s figures.

The largest percentage increase in military spending by any country in 2023 was by the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (+105%), which has been in a protracted conflict with non-state armed groups, mostly in the east of the country. South Sudan recorded the second largest percentage increase (+78%) amid internal violence.

The use of the military to combat organised gangs was said to be a factor in the rise in spending in Central America and the Caribbean, where expenditure was 54% higher in 2023 than in 2014.

Spending by the Dominican Republic rose by 14% in response to worsening gang violence in neighbouring Haiti.

Expenditure reached $11.8bn in Mexico, a 55% increase from 2014, albeit marginally down on 2022. Allocations to the Guardia Nacional (National Guard) – a militarised force used to curb criminal activity – rose from 0.7% of Mexico’s total military expenditure in 2019, when the force was created, to 11% last year.

Diego Lopes da Silva, a senior researcher at Sipri, said: “The use of the military to suppress gang violence has been a growing trend in the region for years as governments are either unable to address the problem using conventional means or prefer immediate – often more violent – responses.”

Just a friendly message to the Spooks and Feds out there     (Intelligence)

Just a friendly message to the Spooks and Feds out there. Hello folks. We know that every social media site in America is heavily monitored, and a place like Upgoat must be watched more cloesly than most.

I wish you would ponder what I am writing, as agents and as human beings. By now you must be fully aware that we are not violent revolutionaries or terrorists, and in fact we are just a small group of people aware of many things going on out there which leave us worried. In my opinion, and this is only my own opinion, you should be as upset and worried as we are.

Many of us are parents and grandparents and we are aware of the many negative changes to our civilization. But this is true for you as well. Please consider just what kind of a world you are leaving for your descendants. Your own ancestors shared our concerns and did what they thought was right to ensure your survival and prosperity. And it worked. You are here and doing fairly well. Will this be true for your own descendants down through the generations? How do your actions today affect your future descendants and the society that they will inherit?

The reason this site exists is simply because like minded people worry about the endless negative consequences of actions taken by all the Spooks, Feds, Agents and organizations out there wishing to force changes on society which would not happen in a sane natural civilization. And even if you believe for your own reasons that your families will be protected from the often destructive changes your higher ups have wrought, simply ask yourself: Is this going to be the kind of world which it could and should nave been?

Think about the future. A weaker America will be a hard place for everybody, and will at some point leave us open to a real invasion by the barbarians, as happens to every crumbling empire. Why not make the world a better place for everybody? There is still time to change direction.

America has the power and technology to bring about a golden age. We here at Upgoat know this. We are not radicals, we are just good people wanting a bit of sanity in our world. Please ponder this and please work to make things better while you can.

Now get back to work. We will be watching and only hope for the best.
