Russia is able to produce oil, but is having trouble getting it to market.
Ukraine has ports on the Black Sea with access to Europe and European markets.
They have better ports on the Black Sea than Russia has.
Assuming control of the Ukrainian ports would provide Russia with some great opportunities to expand its export market without having to build additional port infrastructure themselves.
A pipeline through the Ukraine would probably help them out a lot. Make many rubles.
