If it’s anything like how the FWC has screwed Florida’s recreational fishermen as well as the small commercial operators in lieu of the corporate commercial operations- who have all of the lobbying money, I’d say it is entirely the fault of the regulations.
They have made it so expensive to obtain a license and quota that the corporations are buying out the owner-operators. In the Tampa area, 1 family owns somewhere around 75% of the grouper quota and they are buying up everything as it comes available. They lease quota to other boas at an exorbitant mark up to the point the owners can barely make any money. They have completely closed rec fishing for gags, severely limited black grouper and red snappers to a few months a year. They won’t do a slot limit. The commercial guys can go catch all the fish they want, including little short baby fish (up to a percentage of the overall catch). It is so overfished that we are having the same problem that you have to go out double as far as you used to 20 years ago.
The commercial guys are intentionally wiping out the near shore fish in order to limit the catch of the rec guys- while at the same time lobbying the FWC to completely close recreational fishing in the gulf because the stock is so low. Thus wiping out their competition for the same fish. It is a RICO case that needs investigation.
The same FWC knows that the Jew fish eats a huge percentage of juvenile and small,adult fish. They used to be overfished, but far from it now.
On some wrecks, you can’t reel in anything without upgrading to a 400lb Jewfish. It is killing the stock,of grouper and snappers. Yet, you still can’t even take one out of the water.
The lion fish here aren’t helping either.
We are getting mass amounts of Saharan dust here in FL.
