If this wasn't an accident then it was almost certainly some internal Iranian shit. The Iranian version of what they call "elections" are fifty days away. Perfect amount of time to install a new guy the public know buy don't hate yet and then confirm them in a sham election win.
The late president was not exactly popular. His repressive government has seen numerous public demonstrations. The timeline for a political reboot is almost too perfect. As you alluded to, the president in Iran really only functions as a front man and mouthpiece for the supreme leader. So when the president becomes unpopular or otherwise unpalatable it's just as easy to just get a new one.
This way the supreme leader and the people can blame everything wrong with the country on the dead president. It is the sand nigger version of a political reset.
