Tesla Self Driving story.

submitted by beece to TellUpgoat 3 weeksApr 30, 2024 13:44:32 ago (+9/-1)     (TellUpgoat)

Last Saturday I decided that I'd pull and replace the "frost free" water spigot that had frozen and ruptured last winter in the ADU my wife and I had built. I'd got the plumbers number from my contractor buddy and figured if I turned it into an abortion, like most plumbing jobs I get involved in, I'll just call the pro Monday. The ADU is empty for the next 2 weeks, so lots of time.

We took her car (Tesla Y) to the plumbing supply store noted for their great selection located the next town over. I slapped the lever down twice and "whammo" she's got full self driving! Well, pretty sweet I say to her. She says "I'm not paying Elon $8,000 for the thing". Elon gave all Tesla owners a month free of it hoping they'll buy it. The thing is working perfect, using blinkers to change lanes, stopping at lights and for other cars where needed. Miles later of self-driving perfection ( I had not touched the steering wheel or any pedals for a long time and my anxiety was starting to ease) as we come down the main highway the goddamned car slows and jerks hard to the right directly for the curb that USE TO BE the driveway to the store. I grab the wheel and straighten the car just missing the tire popping moment of slamming into the curb.

The supply store had added a curb to where their original driveway use to be and added a new driveway off the secondary street which was the next right turn on a road. The tesla didn't know to stick to the road for the new driveway. My heart was in my throat. Wife would have made me pay for new tires and rims and I'd have to argue with Elon for the $ratch. Likely would have had shitloads of body damage as the cheap plastic bumper It's not a bumper, its the car body) of the car is lower than the curb.

Todays Tesla convo on voat inspired this: https://www.upgoat.net/viewpost?postid=663096e059535 As an aside, Fuck Forbes. Forbes is known for blackmailing companies. They say shit like, "were gonna run this story which will tank your stock unless you buy a double page ad spread". Then they do. However, they did nail this part correctly: "Tesla's auto-driving feature doesn't just take over and let the person in the driver's seat read a book or take a nap. The driver must be prepared to intervene if an issue arises that the feature can't handle."

Damn straight. Also, if you have frost free hose bibs on your home, make sure your tenants remove the hose before it freezes. Tip of the day....

Upvoated kyk, but I'm looking forward to self driving around town. It should work like this: you pull up an app, tell the car to show up in front to take you to X, Y,. or Z at 7:10. At 7:10, you walk out and hop in. Much cheaper than full ownership where your car gets used 2 hours in a 24 hour day. These self driving cars will be running around all day, and you'll only pay a fraction of the cost.
