I knew Australians a few years ago who used to comment how their country was safe from invasion due to being surrounded by an ocean. I would casually reply that if the English channel didn't protect their British ancestors from the Romans and subsequent invaders, and those same oceans didn't protect the native aborigine from their forebears, why in the world would those same obstacles suddenly become effective for them?
