One of the first lies to break me out of the boomer truth regime. Once I started paying attention to stuff, simple maths like that would get my goat all the time. Of course this particular lie goes much, much deeper.
After extensively studying and practicing spotting all the lies in their "studies" when I was in university, I now just assume they are lying. Generally they keep the numbers they aren't outright making up within 1/2, 1/3, 2x, or 3x of the real numbers, depending on if it's good for their zeitgeist or not.
