Old wallets, cellphones that don't work or expired IDs are good to leave at restaurants after you finish a meal. Pretend you're coming back when you leave it with them, or give them a fake number. And say you left your credit card at Starbucks or something. That way you don't have to go through the ordeal of trying a declined card. Pretend to be very concerned about leaving your credit card at the other business and say you must quickly go and check if it's still there or else must cancel the card. Leave something with them if possible and tell them you'll be back in 15-20 minutes. Don't go back to the same restaurant.
Also sleeping in apartment stairwells is a great place to find shelter in the city at night and nobody bothers you. Pretend you're vising a friend, go behind someone when the front lobby door opens and choose a random floor number. It's good to have a mattress or sleeping bag too as the concrete floor can be hard. Plastic bags are also good for going to the bathroom, you can throw it in the apartment garbage chutes. This assumes you're in a somewhat urban setting that has apartment buildings.
Also if you want a free way to travel long distances use Amtrak. I once rode Amtrak for free and the train ticket checker let it slide. If you stay low key it seems possible but maybe not worth the risk.
You can also apply for welfare at any state which is at least a source of income. But maybe you don't want to on account of the warrants.
I understand your need for discretion. Can you say which direction you're headed towards generally speaking? Like West, North, South or East?
