And just like a communist who says "communism didn't starve people, we deviated from communism" people who think republics are somehow special and perfect will say we deviated from real republicanism so it's not to blame. But we didn't. We still elect people. Those elected people have a choice once in office to serve the people or themselves, all the same as any other stage of a republic. And the results are predictable.
Though it should really be titled Republic: The God that Failed because it's all about politicians which are more powerful in the republican variant of democracy, so the book is if anything more particular to the republican variant of democracy.
