I had a family member that was 101st Airborne on D Day

submitted by con77 to War 2 monthsMar 4, 2024 19:40:10 ago (+6/-1)     (War)

He survived D day and went on to jump behind enemy lines in Operation Market Garden. Where he was badly wounded.
He spent a year in hospital in England.

He never spoke of his experiences in the war but he had been in the thick of it.

I only asked him about it once. On my way into the military. Heres what he said.

"There are no atheists in a foxhole"

Thats it. Simple, elegent, profound. Enough for a 19 year to have an epiphany. And enough to think on for a long time.

R.I.P. Soldier!

Read "Operation Snow", by Koster. Real history, real stunning. You'll never look at WW2 and think anything is "heroic" again. Seriously @Con77. You will feel sympathy for the 400,000+ Americans who needlessly died in WW2, even if you don't give 2 fucks about the estimated worldwide death total of 50–56 million.
