The term for the stupid box and the strap on the arm is phylacteries, or tefillin in Hebrew. Definition: "Either of two small leather boxes, each containing strips of parchment inscribed with quotations from the Hebrew Scriptures, traditionally worn strapped to the forehead and the left arm by Jewish men during morning worship, except on the Sabbath and holidays."
Because it's proscribed by Mosaic law, no one other than jews need to observe it. I find it odd that so many Christians will cite Old Testament scripture to support their views and give tacit approval for the jews' law, but won't commit to practicing completely, which of course would involve wearing phylacteries and offering burnt sacrifices of animals.
