People seem to forget (and the schools of course don't teach) that, by formally seceding from the Union, The Confederacy was actually adhering to both the letter and the spirit of the US Constitution, and were acting according to their rights, as enumerated in writing, under the same.
It was the subsequent actions of the tyrant Lincoln, and the outlaw Union congress that were outside the law. Because they saw their one and only cash cow (from excise taxes, paid on exports) leaving the pen. So terrified of suddenly being broke, they declared and waged bloody war on their own people instead.
This marks the beginning of the us.gov as an outlaw government, willing to set aside any and all laws at their own convenience, even up to and including their own constitution, whenever it suits them.
