Pay off your cards, your mortgage, your cars. No need to spend what you don't already have. Plus... you already know who's favorite activity is loaning money...
You need to tie this in with a "Buy it for life" undertone.... better to spend money on a Good product, that can be repaired and/or maintained than an endless string of disposable crap that has to be trashed/replaced.
