Cigar Recommendations for a Casual Puffer

submitted by MaryXmas to AskUpgoat 11 monthsJun 7, 2023 20:54:40 ago (+9/-0)     (AskUpgoat)

Looking for some online cigars as my local sin shop has bad hours and is hard to get to and they have a shitty selection anyhow. Any recommendations for a sampler pack of 6 or 12? I lean toward the sweeter stuff. Maybe 50-70 bucks?
Thanks pals.

I like cigars but I don't smoke them often.

I like pipe tobacco more. I smoke it every day. They don't have the punch of a cigar, but you can enjoy it all day. It is very nuanced and there is a learning curve. Proper bowl packing, tamping, and self control are needed to draw the best flavor of the blend. Grab a 10 dollar Missouri Meerschaum pipe (they taste as good as a hundred dollar briar) and try out some tobacco in this way. If you want a big punchy feel with a strong nicotine content then I'd recommend a blend called Old Joe Krantz.

For cigars though, I occasionally will have something from either manowar or diesel. They taste good and don't have too many wrapper issues or dreaded canoeing/tubing and they taste good.

Also, many people actually enjoy the smell of pipe tobacco blends. In my experience they even enjoy non-aromatic blends. Aromatic blends are blends mixed eavily with flavorings they call casings. Cherry and fruity things mostly but some are even savory. I almost never smoke aromatic blends.

I should write up a primer or something in case others are interested because I have over 30 pounds of pipe tobacco that I'm cellaring. Virginia blends especially age nicely but most non-aromatic blends will taste better with age.

I almost never smoke them outside of my own place. It just looks goofy and pretentious. It is incredibly luxurious though...

It is incredibly luxurious though...

Gave it up long ago and Red Virginia is a gift from heaven.

It would be cool to have a smoking buddy once in a while! Stop by some time!

My dad smoked a pipe when I was a kid. He always had the blue pouch with a sail boat on it. Something black.
Then he would swish the tobacco out of his teeth. I would know the smell of that blue pouch anywhere.

Captain Black Royal

Borkum Riff Scandinavian Mixture

Borkum Riff Original

Maybe one of those? Sailing and pipe tobacco are often associated. Long ago, sailors would complain that their barrels of tobacco would rot and grow mildews, molds, and other nasty shit that made them unsmokable or sour. They came up with pressing the tobacco into a hard plug. Today they use 6 ton hydraulic presses like at Mac Baren. There are cool videos demonstrating its use. I believe Dan Tobacco owns Mac Baren, but I don't know for sure at the moment. Anyway, Dan Tobacco makes Salty Dogs but that is the plug. It is incredibly hard and your knife needs to be sharp to slice little strips to either smoke or if you like you can use it like chewing tobacco. It's pretty good but a little more on the expensive side. I let mine age a year in a mason jar and it tastes way better.

Yeah. Captain Black. I didn't know that about the sailors.

I hate Drew Estate's Acid line of infused cigars. Truly loathe them, yet the Opulence 3 was an alright stick.

I loved the Lil nasty cone cigars when i was in Afghanistan. Years later I tried to smoke one and it was so bad I tossed it after a few puffs. Afghanistan was my intro to pipes and cigars... I was young and dumb. Hippy Hair flavored cigars, really.

Get a box of 25 Cohiba Siglo V cigars for just a little over 2400$ or about 90 bux a tube, they say they will "satisfy" the smoker for just over 1 hour and 40 minutes. Link.

Do they pair well with lawn mowing?

Do you see a cigar in this dogs mouth?

[ - ] MuricaPersonified 1 point 11 monthsJun 8, 2023 04:49:57 ago (+1/-0)

Way overrated, honestly. Both fake and real Cohiba brands are meh. Then again I've had access to the real ones for most of my life. They're okay for a mid-priced stick, but at their overly-inflated retail values? No way.

Can't go wrong with Rocky Patel or A. Fuentes. Mine and my dad's favorites, respectively.

Connecticut catch 22 if they still sell them. Good smooth cigar

[ - ] Portmanure 1 point 11 monthsJun 7, 2023 20:58:29 ago (+1/-0)

Roll your own, it’s a time honored tradition. You don’t need sweaty Cubans rolling your cigar or die for the state. Get your tobacco straight from Kentucky and roll it your self. Remember lung cancer wasn’t a problem in the colonies until there was a tobacco industry.

I know some aficionados would disagree, but I still think the Liga Privada line from Drew Estates is one of the best, especially the good 'ol No.9; these can be tricky to find and on the pricy side, though. La Nox from LFD is another favorite. Can't think of any sampler packs to recommend.

Black and Mild wood tips. Sold every where tobacco products are carried

Found the nigger

You're not the first to point that out. My friend from Detroit calls me a nigger every time I light one up. Don't care, the Casino flavor goes great with a tallboy

Actually, if you're in south Florida go to homestead, that big stretch of farms on the highway with a gas station on every corner, everyone has cigars from the same dude. They are like 2 dollars a piece, they're amazing, gas stations down here buy them and resell the same ones for 9 bucks where I live. Great smoke, cheap.
