Think of it this way, if there are 100 women and 1 man they can rebuild society (100 potential babies every 9 months). if there is 1 woman and 100 men then society dies.
When many men die, like in war, the ratio changes, and it makes sense, biologically, to have multiple "wives" to a man. The women and children still need a father to protect and feed them, and so you either have polygamy, a whore/bastard class, or a shit ton of nuns.
