The narcissism knows no bounds. My wife works at a major university, and she keeps getting staff emails:
"Hey everyone! It's low-level dipshit grad student here! Now, I know the entirety of language (specifically the English language) uses the pronouns "he" for males and "she" for females, but for me you're going to have to completely upend that! My new pronouns are [some/bullshit]. Thanks in advance!"
And if you "misgender" them or don't use their specified pronouns, you're the asshole. Yea, not the narcissistic fuck insisting that you make special exceptions for them for no intelligible reason, nope. And since SCOTUS extended Title VII of the Civil Rights Act to cover "gender identity" as a form of discrimination - you'd better smile and go along with it, or you're fired (like any institution would risk a federal lawsuit over this). Though I would argue it's discrimination to favor that person in using their pronouns instead of just treating them like everyone else with normal pronouns, but I'd probably lose because I'm not a good lawyer.
You're right - the shit was simple. "He" for men/boys, "she" for women/girls. It completely undermines the entire reason for pronouns in the first place! Pronouns are there so you don't have to know specifics about the person in order to refer to them. Can't remember Ted's name? The simple question becomes:
N1: "Ah shit, what's his name again?"
N2: "Um, so FIRST of all, 'his' pronouns are actually xe/xer you fuckin bigot!"
N1: "Okay... what's, uh..."
N2: "Xor"
N1: "Xor? Xor name again?"
N2: "I forgot. It's like Tom or something. Hey xou! What's xin name again?"
Ted/Tom: "IT'S MA'AM BIGOT!"
So now you have to remember this fucker's pronouns which are completely divorced from appearance (just like gender in general, apparently), plus they've got a name to boot.
