Ranjit Singh voluntarily gave it to the British in exchange for their help in the Sikh Wars. The diamond is not a stolen object. Ranjit Kumar, India's Solicitor-General in 2016 reiterated this in the British Supreme Court several years ago.
The Treaty of Lahore was signed and the Maharajas territory became a vassal state of the British empire, if it did not it was going to get wiped out including Singh's family and bloodline by other street shitters.
