Females are the bottleneck of reproduction. Males can achieve a massive benefit from polygamy. They can attain great reproductive success by fertilizing multiple females and the only obstacle to great reproductive success is other males. The solution is obvious:

Or maybe steal from or enslave other males. Hoard territory and resources. You get the idea. Destructive competition. This works for males in many environments. When females are able to care for their young effectively with few resources from their mates, males will play the field and murder the competition.
But in some environments, it seems that males can achieve higher reproductive success by helpng out with the parenting: building the nest, protecting the babies, finding food. Penguins, swans, gibbons, wolves, white people— all monogamists with males that are more intensive at parental care; and subsequently there is a greater availability of females in those populations and lower levels of male v. male aggressive competition. Monogamist males fight less, because there is lower incentive for them to fight. Alpha males might get the best female but they can’t outreproduce the average male by a wide margin. That prevents the horniest most aggressive males from flooding the population with their homocidal rapist genes.
These competitive behaviors are mediated by genes male hormones or genes acted on by male hormones. These genes and their associated behaviors are older than the human race and they havent changed too much in hundreds of millions of years. Males with higher levels of androgens or certain genes triggered by androgens will be predisposed to polygyny because they are horny or violent or greedy or all three.
The middle east isnt a corrupt head choppy violent hell hole because people read the koran. Its violent because people read the koran and because of that they practiced extreme levels of polygyny and warlording (the two go hand in hand) spreading the genes for high violence and high libido all over the islamic world, for 1400 years.
Polygynists in one country screw their way to genetic ascendancy, spreading their genes for high libido/high greed/high violence (basically hyper-male) until every guy in town is a blood thirsty horn-dog and there are not enough women to satisfy them and there aren’t enough normal males to enslave to support their harems. Then it’s time to go to war.
Through jihad, excess males can be disposed of, new females can be obtained, new males can be enslaved, new loot can be stolen. Polygyny must always acquire a new source of females and a new set of slaves to live off of and support their harems with.

And you're right that low status males end up partnerless.
That is because the average male is a loser with polygamy. Polygamy causes higher reproductive and wealth disparities, and shorter male lives because of murder/war that it causes.
