I think they do it that way for smaller stones, also ultrasound, but don't larger ones require surgery?
The reason Hippocrates opposed invasive surgery like that is because back in his day surgery had such a high mortality rate. Not much point cutting for the stone if the patient is virtually guaranteed to get septicemia.
