Anything to do with patents is short sighted at best.

Patents expire after 20 years, and become public domain. Patent applications (((require))) the invention to be disclosed in detail - although that has changed drastically since 2000 with all the "on a computer" bullshit.

Home use of patents is allowed - as long as you don't sell anything.

The waters are murky about selling products that create patent infringement.

The 20 year protection is why Coke never patented their formula or KFC never patented their "herbs and spices" because after 20 years everybody could recreate it.

Trade secrets are protected forever - until someone reverse engineers it.
