Superhot VR is a FPS game released back in 2017 on Steam at the very dawn of the push for VR headsets.

In two parts of the game, you're expected to shoot yourself in the head with the virtual guns in order to "wake up" and proceed with the campaign.

Until December 2019, there weren't any problems. But then...it happened. A complaint appeared in the forums.

Possible to proceed without shooting yourself in the head?

I love Superhot and was extremely digging the intro to the VR version after finally getting a headset. Yes, I remember how the original game ends...

But being asked to pretend to shoot myself in the head to play more than 5-10 minutes is pretty uncomfortable and distressing, for personal reasons. Borderline dealbreaker - for right now I simply stopped playing even though I genuinely wanted to continue.

Is it possible to proceed without doing this?

The dev responded with considering putting in an option to disable the scenes for people that didn't want to see them. This also came with a promise not to censor the game by removing the scenes entirely.

A reasonable compromise for reasonable people.

Until yesterday.

At 10:00 am on Wednesday, July 21st, the developers lost their fucking minds. They announced that the previously implemented "disturbing scene" toggle wouldn't be good enough in current year and proceeded to gut the game of everything they promised not to remove a year ago.

The reaction was immediate. People rightly accused the devs of being complete pussies and the devs have responded with locking threads and revealing their politics. Support for BLM and anti-racism ahoy!

An entirely reasonable backlash is currently engulfing the steam forums.

Topics are being locked. Negative reviews are being marked as "Off Topic" according to people in the forums. 4 full pages of forum topics calling the devs out on their shit (as of this posting).

Head on over for the show while it's going. Looks like the devs are in superhot water.
