Hopefully, they were just paying lip service to some whiny westerners, or those whiny westerners misinterpreted what they meant, I mean female characters (including yuri characters) already exist all over Japanese entertainment and they're important for boosting sales
Maybe that's what the japs meant, but then again, the japs are slowly falling to the American disease and american money, so chances are that they will make them female characters ugly and man hating and all about how women rule the world and whatnot
