Where do you think the whole 'envy the rich' thing came from in America? Hint: our grandparents didn't have it.
It actually leads to \worse\ financial decisions than would be made otherwise; the term is called 'displaced millionaire' if you want to research more. In short, people act as if they are millionaires that simply haven't earned their million yet, and thus have stupid mindsets (e.g. the 'don't shrink expenses, simply earn more money' or they literally don't bother tracking their bank accounts)
