Built from 1579 to 1583 by the Flemish sculptor Jean Bologne. It is located in a park in the town of Pratolino, 12km north of Florence, in Tuscany (Italy).
Carved into the rock, the Colossus of the Apennines, 14 meters high, according to some sources represents the Roman god Jupiter, and according to others, the god of the mountains - the Apennines being very close - whose harshness it would symbolize (see the stalactites in the beard and hair).
The French philosopher Montaigne, one of the very first foreigners to have visited the place when the park was not finished, and the colossus still under construction, mentions the stone giant in his Travel diary in Italy: "And built himself the body of a giant, which is three cubits wide at the opening of an eye, remaining proportionate in the same way, through which will pour a fountain in great abundance."
