Well Bill Ray certainly didn't help but country music was fucked regardless. Any and all so-called modern popular music in any genre has been commoditized to the point that anyone writing songs for the mass market simply has to nail a handful of musical and lyrical hooks and they are assured at least minimal commercial success.
No doubt there are actually talented singer/song writers out there but unless you happen to know about them thanks to your local scene you are never going to hear them.
For years now country music has just been another pop music. Fortunately we can listen to recordings of the people who made C&W great in the first place. Even if you don't enjoy traditional C&W you can still appreciate the talent that was there. Unlike today's popular music that just make you want to retch.
