The main difference is Gaddafi was still an ortodox Muslim with personal harem, while Assad was progressive monogamist, with a well educated, beautuiful wife. Gaddafi had good relationship with the rest of Muslim countries, while Assad was not liked by the rest of ortodox Muslims because of his willingness to give liberty for women.
