It's always mindblowing when you look into the natural resources that "third-world" shitholes have. Enormous reserves of oil and precious minerals, worth TRILLIONS of dollars... And yet, the population is all starving to death and would die off without the massive aid provided by civilized countries.
I always tell people "Africa is one of the only places on earth where the population is literally walking on top of gold, and somehow they're all poor and criminal." All they have to do is dig that shit up and sell it to foreigners, and these nations could become extremely wealthy.
The problem: when outsiders come in and set up mining equipment and such, the moment that it is given over to the locals, THEY JUST STRIP IT ALL AND SELL IT AS SCRAP METAL. They are completely unable to grasp the concept of "investment" or even "the future" beyond the next few minutes. Break down and sell mining equipment = $100. USE THE MINING EQUIPMENT = hundreds of millions of dollars.
