There's a trend throughout human history of assigning poorly understood phenomena to the supernatural, be it ghosts, aliens, God, etc. As we gain more knowledge on natural events, we also assign more mundane reasoning to said events.
e.g. we used to have rain gods, but as our understanding of physics grew, we now consider rain to be the cycle of water evaporating as it heats, then condensating as it rises through the air to cooler temperatures.
