In 1964 a joint South African / Royal Navy expedition dropped a survey team onto Bouvet Island by helicopter, they came across a shallow lagoon in the center of which sat a half sunken abandoned boat described as a “whaler or ship’s lifeboat,” no one had any idea of where it could have come from or how it got there. A search of the surrounding terrain showed no trace of anyone having been stranded or of any fire or camp. MikeDash.

Since then it has come to light that a party from the vessel “Slava-9” part of the Soviet Antarctic Whaling Fleet, had landed by boat on Bouvet Island close to Cape Circumcision 27 November 1958. They manhandled the boat into the lagoon where they reasoned it would be sheltered from high seas, they couldn’t leave because of worsened weather, and were evacuated by Mi-1Mi Helicopter from the Slava-9 piloted by Averyan Rzhevskiy on 29 November, abandoning the boat in situ. Have yall ever heard of Tristan da cunha? Tiny little volcanic island out in the middle of the ocean with like a couple hundred residents. It’s fascinating. English colony or whatever you call it. I would like to visit. Iv gone down learning everything about them. If they order something off like Amazon it takes months to get there
