The pole shift has a very large chance of creating a tsunami that destroys the coastlines of the world 50-100 miles inland or maybe even farther like 500-1000 miles, it's hard to know the scale.
There is quite a bit of evidence that when the event happens the rotation of the earth will be at minimum slowed. We have stories of ancients from one side of the earth that talk about the day the sun never set, and on the other side the day the sun never rose. We shouldn't have ancient stories from different sides of the planet with binary views of the effects of a pole shift.
So, if at minimum the Earth slows it rotation during the event the water on the surface will have the original momentum of the usual rotation, if it slows and/or stops for a time the water keeps moving. Destroying all coastlines.
The force of the water on the tectonic plates will more than likely cause earthquakes and volcanoes. The cataclysm happens because the water keeps going as the earth slows or possibly even stops for a moment.
The real, incredible danger, is that during the pole flip event the Earth's magnetic shield will be down. If the sun sends out a CME it's over. It'll smash the Earth and send us back to the stone age. Imagine a million nukes go off on the surface all at once. The damage will be incomprehensible.
