Spotify is a hoax, forcing you to pay. After the end of free trial, even basic functions are switched off. It's normal for an app to have ads in free mode, but switching off basic functions is idiotic.
Are there other similar apps that have a normal free mode?
deezer all the way. although i dont think they have a free option any more but ive happily paid about 5 bucks a month for it for years and its gotten me through a fuckload of really fuckin boring times. i mean my fuckin car has a damn 6 stacker cd player in it.
i listen to some pretty fuckin bizarre niche shit at times, anything from 60s jazz fusion type shit (Focus) to 2020s german metal to fuckin 'winny puhh' from Estonia (Meiecundemees uks korsakov laks eile latti/Peegleporand - fucking bizarre, no fucking idea what the fuck theyre singing, but entertaining as fuck) - all there, if you can think of it. they probably have it.

Had an urge to learn how to sing it but had forgotten it for 30 something years, and managed to get it memorised lol.
i havent owned a single CD in more than a decade. so its phone, bluetooth to fm adaptor, and Trucks FM on 88.0 on my commute with a deezer playlist.
