Why people praise The French Connection (1971)?

Personally I find it just boring. Almost nothing happens. All the movie is slow. Characters are boring and not charismatic. I forgot the movie instantly. But it's considered a good movie. Did I miss something?

Seem to recall some connection to dissident right themes - but dunno what it was. Maybe Carto, the Spotlight, and anti-Zionism.

Never seen the movie myself.
