The issue isn't "how do you keep them from knowing which gun has a live round before you fire?" but rather that you can feel the difference between a blank and a live round when you fire it. So yeah, I agree it's a myth, or at least it's a lie they told the firing squad members themselves because they figured they wouldn't know that a blank has no recoil.
