Man, I was way off base. Brian Eno did the start up sound for Windows 95. He said when Microsoft approached him about it, the specifications were that it should sound harmonic, hopeful, and inspiring, and only five seconds long. It was the last thing that intrigued him. He couldn't imagine how to do all that in five seconds, but I think he did it. The XP start up sound is pretty good too.
