I mean you're not wrong. We don't typically say "9mm caliber" though. It's 9mm, or 9x19 (or whatever). E.g. "I have a .40 cal and a 9mm pistol."
His confusion seems to stem from not realizing something like a .223 caliber refers to a round that is 22.3/100ths of an inch, as opposed to 5.56 which is a measurement in millimeters.
I think the main difference in nomenclature is Americans don't typically refer to the cartridge size numerically. So instead of .22x.__, we have a .22 short, .22 long, etc.
