We really need to break "bad things"into two categories.

1.
Bad things people do to each other. Rape murder, theft, etc. all occur, and God allows them to occur, due to our free will. We have the ability to choose good or evil, and whenever someone chooses evil then someone else gets hurt. God certainly takes that bad thing and tries to use it for good, if we allow it and allow God to work in our lives. God doesn't force us to choose, forced virtue is no virtue.

2.
Bad things caused by natural occurrence. This would include disease, birth defects, etc. Stuff we don't generally have control over (or limited control). This is harder to understand, but again, God will always bring about the good if we allow it. This usually involves others stepping in and helping out, this showing the love of God through people's actions. A person caring for an elderly parent with cancer, for instance.

I understand that it doesn't seem very loving to allow someone to suffer, but we need to ask ourselves what have we done to ease someone else's suffering? Isn't that what God calls all of us to do?
