Yeah, it's not very subtle. Previous generations last century managed to raise their children allowing some kinds of behavior some today would find incomprehensible, but somehow they managed to live through it and become adults and have children of their own. This was normal until late generation boomers and Gen X started having children and thought they invented parenting and that their children were the most precious and special generation of children that ever existed. That's when all of the over-precautiousness started. Play dates, structured days for children, helicopter parenting ... that all started in the 80s and 90s and society is worse off for it.
