They are mostly outdoing the reds because they can eat acorns that aren't ripe yet and digest the tannins, but reds can't and have to leave it on the tree until it is fully ripe. So, the grey's eat and store all the food before the reds are even able to grab them, and their larger size makes it impossible for reds to protect their home turf.
