Railway Archeology

During a trip through the city, I drove past a peculiar site. All intuition told me I was driving under a bridge. However, there was no bridge. Yet on both sides were two very large stone retention walls. These are the very large rectangular cuts of stone meant for retaining earth typical of old railway bridges. That was interesting, I thought.

The next time driving by, I checked to see if these old stone walls were actually serving any purpose. Yet behind the walls was a park with a playground with no evidence that the walls had any function. I couldn’t get a view of the area behind the other wall.

The third time driving by, I made a mental note to myself to investigate further when I got home. I went on Google Maps and saw a park on one side and a parking lot on the other. But upon zooming out, I noticed a diagonal cut across the property lines. This diagonal line cut through a massive chunk of the city. It consisted of parking lots, streets, and shopping centers. What was the purpose of the diagonal line?

Still, I followed this anomalous line all the way down until it intersected with a river. I jumped into Street View and much to my delight, had a photographic view of the river where a small section of railway ran across an old bridge. I found this interesting as there is no record of this railway online, at least, not yet. This was a fun little investigation into a piece of history.
