I suspect part of it has to do with what we think a "wizard", "demon", "exercism" (or "exercise"), or "sorcery" is. If I say "wizard" most think "Gandalf". In reality:
Wizard = One who practices (ard) Wisdom (wiz, or wis, pronounced wise)
Then, they give you shit like "wizard's spell" when in reality, a wizard is one that "unspells", or "sorts properly".
Look up "Sorcery" and you'll see it comes down to meaning "one who sorts (or casts) by supernatural means".
Then, take all that understanding of the words and read things from the middle ages now. It all literally sounds like today if you translate properly, but there are those that want to obfuscate the language.
The battle at hand is Wizards vs Sorcers for the souls of the Enchanted (yep, I just did a "three kinds of people" thing). It kind of blows my mind that it comes down to it given how jewed up my mind was with TV and movies. It's all really about being a steward of nature, and defending it from those that are twisted (i.e. possessed by demons and need excercisms to be saved - i.e. have "incorrect beliefs" and wish to resort the world based on them).
