In the XX century there were many video cassette formats.
The most popular three were:
Video 2000 by Philips.
Betamax by Sony.
VHS by JVC.
All three had bad resolution and were huge. Also, the Video 2000 by Philips was the most retarded video cassette, because you had to switch sides to watch movies, like with music cassettes.
Sony invented a perfect video cassette, Video 8. It was of the small size like music cassettes and had better video resolution than anybody else.
Guess what? The Big Tech companies voted for VHS by JVC to become the standard video cassette instead of the Video 8 by Sony for no technical reason. They did it just because.
