It’s an old phrase from farming. The “back 40” (acres) was the field away from the “home field” (where the house and barn were located) and was generally considered not just remote, but less desirable.

Yes, I think for homesteading in general electric cars are good because it's easier to generate your own electricity than it is to distill your own fuel. And you have to modify vehicles to run on ethanol/methanol, if that's the route you go. It's definitely hard to make gasoline.
